Day 4
Monastery of The Cross, Valley of The Cross, Jerusalem
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share with you that I am now travelling through Israel. Today I’m in Jerusalem , and this is a photo of one of the most amazing historical places. This is the Monastery of the Cross in the Valley of the Cross.
Around the monastery there are dozens of olive trees, some are young, but a few are many hundreds of years old. (not far there is the oldest tree which is believed to be over 3000 years old).
From some old olive press ruins around here, we know that the place had olive trees over 2000 years ago, and legends tell us that it was from one of the trees in this valley that the cross for Jesus was made from.
The Monastery itself is about 30 minutes of pleasant walk from the churches of the old city and Via Dolorosa, and it was established in the 4th century. The current building was built in the 11th century. Since then monks have been living in it for over 1000 years, and are still living in it today.
